The technology I have in the classroom itself is an ActiveBoard, Activotes, an ActivWand, and a document camera. I also have 5 desktop computers in my classroom and 16 notebooks. The school I work at also has 2 computer labs that we have a 1 hour scheduled class and can use other times by appointment. These labs are also available to the children to use with passes during recess time.
The school I work at has around 550 students enrolled and only a 0.014% turnover rate. It is made up of 54.9% male and 45.1% female. The ethnic diversity of our school as a whole are 0.2% American Indian/Alaskan Native, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 11.5% Asian/Pacific Islander, 1.8% Black, 5.7% Hispanic, 71.2% white and 9.7% identified as two or more races. We have a pretty high SES with only 11.8% of our students on free or reduced lunch. We have 9.0% of our students listed as special needs and 4.8% on a 504 plan. There is no migrant population in our school area and none of our students are in foster care.
We have a total of 31 teachers at our school with an average teaching experience of 17.6 years and 61.3% having at least a Master’s degree. This makes for an interesting dynamic for younger teachers but I have found that many of the more experienced teachers are open to new ideas. This openness allows for a lot of collaboration and use of technology by everyone.
The test scores for our third grade have been consistently above state and district levels. The percent of students meeting standard in 2010 for reading was 97.6% and 89.2% for meeting standard in math.
As mentioned before the community around our school is middle to upper class which leads to a high SES for the school. Thus, our levies are passed almost every year making money and resources available for many areas including technology. We are in a suburban neighborhood located in the Woodinville area next to the local Jr. High School. We have many volunteers and as mentioned before I have 10 parent volunteers and 1 high school student that come in on a regular basis. We also have very high parent involvement in other one time activities such as field trips and activity days.
